The Department of Antiquities (DOA) t launched its 2014-2018 Strategy for the Management of Jordan’s Archaeological Heritage
The Department of Antiquities (DOA) launched its 2014-2018 Strategy for the Management of Jordan’s Archaeological Heritage, which will improve the conservation and preservation of Jordan’s priceless archeological heritage. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) supported the development of the strategy in 2007 and updated it this year with the DOA.
Aligned with Jordan’s National Tourism Strategy, the updated DOA strategy provides a vision and plan for better management of archaeological sites in Jordan so as to ensure conservation and preservation efforts as well as sustainable tourism.
Jordan’s archaeological heritage is one of its strongest tourism assets. Tourism in Jordan, led by cultural tourism, is the largest single contributor to the economy. The strategy will improve the management of Jordan’s cultural and heritage assets, protect them, and ensure their sustainability.
The DOA and its partners updated the strategy in October with support from the USAID Economic Growth Through Sustainable Tourism Project. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Jordan Inbound Tour Operators Association, Petra Archaeological Park, Wadi Rum Protected Area, and the Baptism Site were involved in the updated strategy
